Jessica Kolkmeier is a Houston-based artist working in 2D mediums, primarily photography. She has produced digital pieces, but prefers darkroom methods, including silver gelatin and cyanotype prints. Interested in works that deal with the human personality and tendency, she orchestrates portraits and still life to capture her understanding of these subjects. Earlier works include physically transforming her subjects with the help of props/paint/etc. to create new identities. Recently she has been focused on bringing a more personal touch into her work with items and themes from childhood and the relationship between herself and her mother. With this she hopes that she can harness her somewhat disjointed thoughts into understanding. Moving forward, Kolkmeier will continue to bring her own story into her work, as well as explore and push the aspects of portraiture, and what exactly defines a photo as such; can a subject matter without human presence be considered a portrait?
